Where:    Renaissance Glass Studio  Asheville, NC

When:     Sept. 7, 8, 9  Friday, Saturday, Sunday

Time:       10am-5pm

Cost:        $410 plus $40 materials fee paid to instructor

Level:       Experience helpful but not required

In this class, you will use greyscale values rather than traditional colors to create form and expression to make a mosaic pet portrait.  Precision cutting techniques will be covered, as well as andamento, glass selection and shading.

Since this technique is more time consuming, a finished portrait is not expected at the end of the 3 day workshop.  However, the eyes and a good portion of the face can be completed, depending on the experience of each student.  This workshop is intended for intermediate or advanced mosaic artists, and should not be used as an introduction to mosaics.

Students can either work on a black or white photo provided by the instructor or can provide a PHOTO prior to the class.  Photos should be high resolution showing good detail and have fairly strong contrast.

Donna will map out the design before the class if using a photo provided by the student.

** A phone with a camera is recommended to use as a tool for grayscale values.

Most of the class is one-on-one instruction with attention to andamento and glass selection.  The goal is for the students to have confidence to complete their project on their own.

Donna Van Hooser began making mosaics while working as an artist for Hallmark Cards.  With her background in illustration, she like to incorporate storytelling with her work and uses classical and whimsical elements.  She learns through experimentation and finds inspiration from the materials themselves.   She has been able to work as a full time mosaic artist and instructor since retiring from Hallmark in 2015.  She treats each glass piece as an individual brush stroke that will create harmony with the surrounding pieces.
